I ramble. I know this. Not today, kids.
for those who couldn’t make it through my in-depth how to here are four simple steps for “spell casting” that can be applied to ay magical operation, be it a charm, incantation, ritual or whatever.
Step Zero: Calm Clear Cleanse and Concentrate
Before magical work you need to calm the body and mind. Relaxation is a key skill for spell casting and other work because it allows to flow freely between movements and attitudes. Any relaxation technique or meditation can work for this.
You also need to clear your mind of any thoughts or feelings outside of the work at hand. Be here and now. Meditation can also help in this area. A bell or tuning fork is also a handy tool.
Cleanse your personal energy matrix and surrounding area of any unhelpful energies or unwanted spirits. Chakra toning, burning sage, and pentagram banishing are useful for this.
Concentrate. Focus all your mind and being onto a single point directly in front of you on the wall or floor. Release the concentration and allow your eyes to gently take in everything in front of them. The ability to dial in and out with your concentration is needed to place varying levels of focus on different parts of the work.
You may have noticed or surmised that meditative exercises are useful for sll four of the “c” words discussed above. With practice you can use the same couple of meditative or energy channeling procedures to calm, clear, cleanse, concentrate, AND simultaneously enter your magical state.
Step One: Immersion
This first step you will do before actually beginning the prescribed operation, ritual, or whatever. Think about your intention very clearly. Know exactly what you want to happen.
In your mind go to the future and be in that moment wherein the thing you desire has come to be. See, hear, and feel this moment most vividly.
Immerse yourself in how it will be; all the sights, sounds, smells, tactile experiences, and emotions of your victory. Be elated, grateful, smugly satisfied, whatever you will feel when you win, I want you to feel before you begin.
Be in that moment, then relax and let the moment go. Tell yourself and mean it: This is what will be, unless the All Mind and Great Spirit have a better plan for me.
NOTES: Your will should be as solid as the knowledge of the inevitable. “Will” is, after all, future tense, or what is coming to pass. In the same moment you must be open to variation, for magic takes the path of least resistance and there are always many forces at work in your life and the world around you.
Step Two: Raising Energy
You have prepared yourself and your space, and have just returned from your immersion experience, with the scene of your success fresh in your mind. You will now gather and raise the energy needed to propel your intention into manifestation.
Begin the procedure for the spell or operation you have planned and proceed through whatever steps are laid out for this. As you work, use your intention and imagination to gather and raise energy.
Lighting a candle brings fire energy into the area. Feel it, harness it and cause it to grow from the candle flame and from your solar plexus.
You can move your body as you work too in order to generate both mechanical energy and raise your ki. You probably know the Chinese term chi, for life force or the energy in all things. Ki is a Japanese word which also refers to life force but specifically to the life force united with intention.
Borrow movements from Yoga or Tai Chi and use them in your magic to build and deliver energy. Tense our muscles and use your will to put energy into your work.
If reciting chants or incantations, singing these with enthusiasm is a great way to elevate your vibration and put willpower into the words. Names of spirits contain inherent power, and some words are full of elemental energy or planetary forces.
Drawing the Futhark runes or tracing them in the air and repeating their names is an excellent way to bring specific energies to you. Use your chakras to channel energy into your aur or the room around you and use a wand to gather this energy into a ball or cone.
Study and know your magical correspondences so you can bring items like plants, minerals, everyday objects, colors, sounds, smells, and more into your magical work. This allows you to introduce energy of a specific nature to your operation. More correspondences means more energy at your disposal for the work at hand.
There are many ways to gather energy. Use your imagination to do this as you perform the magical operation.
Step Three: Programming Energy
When you get near the main focal point of the spell it’s typically time to program the energy you have raised. This can vary and it will be obvious when you look over an operation at which point the energy is collected and at which point the energy is released prior to the close of the operation.
Between those stages is where you want to be sure the energy you have gathered and raised is programmed for the work at hand. One way to get this done is through the correspondences you chose for the work.
As mentioned in tine last section correspondences are a good way to raise energy. They also, by their very nature, program energy as they raise it. Choosing the right correspondences for the job will help make sure you unleash the most ideal energy with your spell ritual, etc.
You can also interject brief episodes of visualization and immersion within the techniques you enact. It takes only a few seconds for visualization or immersion to imprint subtle and causal forces with your intention so this can be done without interrupting your workflow.
In this step you are impressing the energy you have gathered with what you intend for it to do. Hence the term programming, as if writing a script for a software application
Step Four: Release Energy (and everything else)
At the conclusion of your work, when you take the last action or say the final words in the spell, you shall dump all of your programmed energy into that last push and release it the causal spheres. Send it away with love and a blast of all your willpower, then forget about it altogether.
Imagine draining all of the programmed energy from your body into the goal and sending all the force accumulated in your magic circle to the target. Then forget about it.
You must allow your unconscious mind to work with subtle energies and perhaps spirits from this point. Holding onto the work or thinking about the outcome can interfere with these processes and should be avoided.
I wish to acknowledge Scott Cunningham, from whom I stole the framework for this four-step method. I tweaked and re-gifted what he gave me without ever meeting me through one of his books many years ago.
