People come to magic for different reasons, ranging from a casual interest in the paranormal to a deep conviction that they are “supposed to” wall the magical path. It is quite common for people to have less than perfect clarity regarding why the chose to study magic.
Similarly, the question of what to do or how to study looms prominently over the daily routines, or lack thereof, for many new practitioners. My suggestions is always to just do some magic, but this seems to lack the desired motivational effect for many.
The general ineffectiveness of my advice has led me to continually seek new ways to inspire and motivate the magical noob. What, I ask, if there were a way to…
Improve One’s Skill while Simultaneously Striving for Refinement of the Spirit, a.k.a. Enlightenment?
The answer, obviously, is that indeed magical courses of study and methodologies of practice are replete with approaches that do exactly that, i.e. give one the vehicle to improve skill sets while elevating consciousness at the same time.
Here’s another one of those approaches you might toss into your trick bag.
The Four Worthy Pursuits of the Magus (or Initiate, Adept, Sorcerer, and so on as you wish)
These “holy four” (I’m being pretentious) represent phases of development or even levels of advancement in a mystical sense while also giving you general targets to measure progress. I should disclaim on the front end, the nature of this set is more ambiguous and the measurability less clear than what I normally set forth.
Still, I can’t help but like this model of “worthy pursuits”, because once the construct is laid out on the page or spoken aloud it really is some catchy shit, and I like catchy shit, being a poet in my spare time.
The Four worthy Pursuits are to Feel and Receive, Sense and Perceive, Know and Understand, and finally Act and Command.
Hang on here. You know what I just realized? I already posted about this one month ago nearly to the day. I’ll be damned.
All good. I’m not ditching this item because I want to build content for my site but why write the whole thing again when I can just give you this link?
