Unity

Principle of Unity

The ALL is One

A natural progression from the idea of the ALL or of totality objectified as the All is of course the notion of unity. Everything that makes up the great All is obviously part of the same whole. Reason then concedes that all things, everywhere and at all times, share a connection, even if only from their categorization as part of the ALL.

There is reason to believe, however, this connectedness goes beyond mere organizational conceptualization. If not at a direct physical level, which may be implied through physics by the phenomenon of entanglement when considering the entirety of our reality once existed as a singularity.

It is of course difficult to discuss such ideas, especially without a physics pedigree. At a glance we may infer that if everything was a singularity that has expanded into this universe, everything should be entangled, having once been directly part of the same state.

I realize the awkwardness of using past tense to discuss an event or state existing “prior to” (I don’t even know if that’s correct to say) time as we now know it. Nevertheless I think the idea is valid, or at least not batshit bonkers.

If we parlay this rough idea into metaphysics or the magical paradigm it gives us (potentially) a stable foundation for the idea that the Tao flows through all the ten thousand things or that all things are joined by the infinite spirit from which they emerge and to which they return.

Back to Pragmatism

Whatever the truth of the matter, reality often behaves as if we are all part of the same, great oneness. The principle of unity serves plausible explanations for premonition, telepathy, synchronicity, and magical results that seem to bypass material cause and effect.

It also seems clearly true that when we hurt another we risk hurting ourselves or when we bless others we likewise find blessings. Karma and similar ideas rest comfortably on the principle of unity.

The benefits of acting as if we are unified are not trivial. More consideration for the feelings and wellbeing of others and ore efficacious magic are standouts that make this axiom worthwhile until a different principle presents itself as more likely.

I often write that magic, among other things is “a connection we make with the deepest part of ourselves, which in turn is connected to everyone else and to every point in space and time”. I’ll tell you a secret: when I first wrote that years ago i had no idea why I was saying it, but it absolutely needed to be released onto the page so it would stop nagging at me to let it go.

Often inspiration in one form or another points the way to truth that our mind may or may not recognize in that moment. These days the interconnectedness of everyone and everything seems to play out most obviously in daily life and mystical pursuit.
