Rune Magic Basics

When you see the term runes on this blog I or one of the other contributors are referencing the Elder Futhark Runes. These amazing marks were discovered in Northern Europe and they represent the oldest alphabetical written language of the Germanic people.

From a Magical Perspective

While not classified as a sacred language by scholars, many believe the Elder Futhark is just as deserving of this designation as Hebrew and Sanskrit. The 24 runes correspond to and represent divine forces, cosmic principles, and deep mystical realities.

Such are the things that can be channeled through runic magic.

Magic with the runes can generally be classified as natural magic and folk magic, but there are ritual uses and operations that can be explored. While obviously a form of symbol magic in their own right these characters can also be integrated easily and effectively with personal sigils and other symbol sets.

Runes are of course also a well-known divination utility but this post will focus on their magical applications.

A Few Basic Principles of Runic Magic

There are four basic approaches to making magic with the Futhark Runes. In applied magical terminology an “approach” is a broad term sometimes interchanged with “method” or ed as a descriptor for “class”, as it defines the technical and/or philosophical range and perspective with which a magician engages with his or her art.

The only consideration above the approach is the branch, or whether or not the magic to be worked will be practical or esoteric in nature.

These four encapsulate pretty much any operation you might undertake using runes:

  1. Non-linguistic method
  2. Linguistic and phonetic method
  3. Bind Runes
  4. Integration with other symbology

Let’s quickly unpack these and get you on your way.

Non-Linguistic Method

This is the use of runes as stand-alone symbols regardless of their phonetic value. They are applied based on their meanings and emanations and not used to form coherent words.

Learn the names of the runes and intone them as you utilize their image.

Linguistic Method

Obviously then linguistic methodology implies use of the runes to form coherent words and even phrases. This need not be done in Norse or other early European languages (although bonus points would surely apply!) and can be done by arranging the proper rune-sounds to fit your needs.

This is a most excellent way to uncover and wield the rune’s magic. Simply begin by using them to form statements of intention, simultaneously arranging the per their power and relevance to the operation you are performing.

Bind Runes

This is the combination of multiple runes to form a single and purposeful symbol to attain a magical effect. Start by taking the runes that sound out your name and forming a symbol sealed with your intention.

Integration

Runes can be deployed or utilized anywhere, anytime, and during any sort of magical work. They are comfortable in all magical settings and (at least for me) fit perfectly into any order, arrangement, incantation, etc.

That’s a Wrap

Right on. So there’s a marginally useable dialog about runic magic. I will return with more substantiative material when time permits.
