Runes can refer to a handful of different glyphic systems or characters, but in the context of this blog 99% of the times when you see the term it refers to the Elder Futhark or possibly the Younger Futhark system. These letter-symbols have been found for old English, Germanic, and other cultures primarily from Northern Europe and may be the oldest written language of the people connected to these regions. They are also an awesomely potent and complete, self-contained system of mysticism and magic. Anyone who is willing to study and practice their lessons can wield the magic of the runes. While they represent a special connection to the descendants of the Germanic tribes and the cosmic powers many have called gods, they are in no way exclusive to these people nor “off limits” to those of other genetic descent.
